That New Boyfriend Smell

There is something incredibly exciting about getting into a new relationship, and I like to call it the "new boyfriend smell," similar to the smell of a new car, or a designer handbag. Everything is fun and fresh whilst you are getting to know each other, then after a while that new boyfriend smell starts to fade into something more comfortable, like morning coffee and warm woollen jumpers.

Me and Adrian are at that comfortable stage now, and after six months of being together I've noticed that scent plays a huge role in our relationship. From the first few weeks when I would steal his jumpers to breathe in the soft spice of Hugo Boss* as I slept, right until last Saturday and the lingering scent of pizza boxes hinting at having spent the evening before tucked up in bed, watching How I Met Your Mother.

I'm very into perfumes myself (I apparently 'smell like Debenhams beauty hall' to him, accurate) and so I appreciate that he always smells incredible. I love all his aftershaves and sprays as the gentle patchouli notes he favours make me feel comfortable and safe. When I feel nervous or stressed, I'll cuddle into him and it always calms me down. It's such a recognisable scent that if I pass someone in the street wearing Lynx You or Gucci Guilty*, I immediately think of him.

Even regular, nondescript scents remind me of our relationship. Every fellow hopeless-romantic says they love the smell of rain, but to me it's much more than that. It reminds me of when we drove through a thunderstorm with the sunroof down, drenching both ourselves and the car whilst laughing maniacally. His car smelt damp for days afterwards, but it was simply a reminder of the amazing time we had that night.

For our 6 month anniversary, I wanted to get him something really special. I didn't want the silly things I usually buy him, like comedy socks or car magazines, so I was absolutely thrilled when Fragrance Direct contacted me regarding promoting their men's range, including their new fragrance finder quiz and Father's Day gifts. I took the quiz with my boyfriend in mind and found him to be a 'Rustic Gent' (how cute is that?) and that his perfect fragrance would be Davidoff Horizon Extreme*, which was incredibly accurate as he had only used up his sample of it the week before! It's a lovely eau de parfum with cedar and amber notes, so I can't wait to see the look on his face when he opens it.

What scents remind you of your significant other?

  1. I know exactly what you mean about the 'new boyfriend smell'. I am currently in a relationship that has lasted for just over two months now and the best thing about men is that they tend to stick to one scent and that one scent is 'them', you know? Buying a fragrance for an anniversary sounds like a great idea!

  14. My boyfriend has only one perfume but I don't know if he puts it on often. We're in a long distance relationship so hard to tell. However, he has a really distinctive scent, that I am addicted too I must confess! xx corinne
