DIY American Cream Pink Conditioner

If you're brave enough to follow me on Twitter, you'll know that this past weekend I dyed all of my hair candyfloss pink, something I've wanted to do since my 2012 'Scene' days. I've had bits of pink in my hair before, but it's always rinsed out after one wash, so this time I'm taking extra measures to keep the pretty pink as long as possible, starting with my own DIY pink conditioner.

To start right at the beginning, the dye I use is Rosé by Bleach London, who have also created Rosé shampoo and conditioner to help maintain pastel pink hair. I bought both of these along with the dye itself from Boots as they were on a 3-for-2, with the intention of solely using them to wash and condition my hair with and forgoing my extensive LUSH hair-care collection for the time being.

Everything was going well. I pink'd my fur and left it a couple of days before summoning the courage to wash it for the first time, which is where my fool-proof plan fell apart. I washed my hair with the Rosé shampoo without a problem, however when I twisted off the conditioner's screw-cap lid and gave it a sniff, all that came to mind was cat poo. I feel so awful saying that about such a good brand, but it was the first thing that popped into my head, and I definitely did not want it going on my hair.

Panicking, as I knew my hair would dry out and break without conditioner, I grabbed the bottle of Rosé dye off the side and tipped the remaining quarter of it into my near-empty bottle of American Cream. I hesitantly added a few blobs of the Rosé conditioner to bulk up the mixture, praying the poo-smell didn't follow, and gave it a good shake. I honestly felt like a genius as I watched the bottle of conditioner turn pink before my very eyes, whilst still keeping it's gorgeous vanilla scent. Yay!

So far I have used my DIY pink conditioner twice and I am honestly loving how soft, silky and pink it is keeping my hair. All the usual positives of the regular American Cream with the added bonus of a pink rinse! The second time I used it I washed my hair with I Love Juicy, a shampoo that is notorious for fading my semi-permanent colours, however with the conditioner I barely noticed any change in colour at all.

In case you don't follow me on Twitter (why tho?) and I know you're all dying to see, here's a picture of my little makeover. Don't I look adorable?

How do you maintain coloured hair?
And what is one colour you've always wanted to go?

  2. Oh how cute your hair is! :) I have ombre with cold brown to blonde at the moment, I use Color Mask in tone Silver to maintain my look. I'd love to go back to grey at some point but not during the summer because it would be gone in a week.

  10. You look amazing with pink hair!! And what a great job thinking on the fly to come up with this DIY conditioner! I hope your hair stays vibrant for more weeks to come. I've always wanted pink hair but after one disastrous experiment with bleach, I don't think it's in the cards.
