Review: L’Oreal Miss Baby Roll Mascara

I've said it a hundred times and I will say it again - I am a makeup snob. If it's not high-end, I'm not interested. I also never buy anything that I haven't thoroughly researched reviews of first. So what was different about this Miss Baby Roll mascara that made me change my mind and buy it on impulse?

The truth is I'm a sucker for pretty packaging and I was truly intrigued by the shape of the brush, so when I spotted this in Superdrug for £5.99, I snapped it up on the spot.

Before buying the mascara, I had never even heard of it before. I hadn't seen any adverts or reviews for it, and the last time I owned a L'Oreal product it was 2009 ( I will admit I have been loving samples of the Infallible Total Cover Foundation though) so I'm assuming it's a fairly new product. What drew my eye to it was the cutesy 1950's themed packaging. It made me think of pastel coloured Soda Shops, pin-up girls and heart shaped sunglasses. I usually hate the tacky packaging of drugstore brands, but the 'Instagram appeal' of this mascara was just too tempting to pass up.

The mascaras I have been religiously using over the last two years have been Benefit's 'They're Real' and 'Roller Lash', along with Too Faced's 'Better Than Sex'. I can honestly say that Miss Baby Roll is a pretty good rival for Better Than Sex, which is currently my favourite mascara.

The wand itself I think is quite unique as I've never before owned a mascara with such a defined spiral, which adds to the retro vibe. I tend to 'blink' my mascara on instead of wiggling or stroking the brush across my lashes, so this shape of brush gives me super long spidery, vintage style lashes which I feel look really pretty. I love the effect that this mascara gives me and I think it's true to the name and the advertised claims of "Mega volume, curl & hold."

Quality wise, it's a real shame to say that this mascara really isn't the best. It looks lovely when first applied in the morning, but by dinner time it starts flaking around my eyes and by four o'clock there's no traces of it left, aside from a few black specks on my cheeks, yet my lashes still feel chunky and coated! I feel the flaking is due to the consistency of the mascara being quite dry, it dries almost instantly after being applied.

If you don't mind having to reapply this mascara quite often (and absolutely scrub to get the residue off) it really does give your lashes a lovely curl and the colour is a true jet black, unlike some mascaras which are more of a charcoal grey. I found that applying this mascara over the top of Benefit's They're Real eyelash primer decreased the flaking quite substantially and helped it last longer, but obviously nobody is going to buy a £19.50 primer to use with a £5.99 mascara.

Overall, I like it. It's not quite my favourite and I'm definitely not converted to drugstore mascaras, but I feel L'Oreal have made some serious progress with the packaging and the wand of this mascara, and if they could perfect the formula it could be an absolute winner. Go #CurlSquad.

The mascara is available from the usual stores such as Boots and Superdrug, and the shades to choose from are Black, Waterproof Black, Teal, Indigo and Lilac. No brown though unfortunately, which I feel is another let down on L'Oreal's part.

What's your favourite mascara?
Will you be purchasing Miss Baby Roll?

  3. The packaging is bloody adorable! I think I'll have to give this a go, I have the L'oreal telescopic mascara and love it for my bottom lashes. I've never seen a mascara wand like this before which is rather intriguing. -xo

  4. It's a shame that it dries so quickly because it looks like it should be good. I always use make up from brands like maybeline and Rimmel, can't afford those high end brands! Haha
