£6.50 MAC Velvet Teddy Dupe

k
I only bought the cult-classic MAC Velvet Teddy lipstick on Friday (you may have seen my excited tweets), but before I even had time to write a review on it, I accidentally bought a dupe for it on Sunday.

I'm pretty sure this means I need to venture out of my comfort zone when it comes to lipstick shades as I seem to be drawn to the same ones every time, but at least it makes for an awesome dupe blog post!

In case you are unaware of MAC's Velvet Tedddy, it's an iconic matte lipstick in a deep-toned beige hue which is so perfectly pretty, I'm totally obsessing over it already. The one problem is, MAC is in a bit of a grey-area when it comes to animal testing, so for some it's imperative that they find a good dupe of their products.

The dupe I'm talking about in this post is the NYX Lip Lingerie in the shade 'Bedtime Flirt', a liquid lipstick retailing at £6.50. As I mentioned before, I came accross this dupe entirely by accident as yesterday was my best friend's 18th birthday, so I took her to Meadowhall as a birthday treat. Obviously we headed straight to the NYX stand in Boots, and obviously the first thing I did was check out the Soft Matte lip creams.

After I wan't able to shove bitches out the way fast enough to get to them (jk, I hovered around for a bit until it was apparent they weren't going to move) I meandered over to the other side of the stand where, lo and behold, I came upon the fabulous NYX Lip Lingerie range.

The Lip Lingeries are gorgeous nudes (YAAASS all the nudes) described as weightless liquid lipsticks with plush matte finishes. Unable to swatch them as the testers had mysteriously disappeared, I simply picked two which colours stood out to me. The first was Embellishment, a muted purple shade, the second was the lovely Bedtime Flirt.
You can see in the swatch above how almost identical these two shades are in colour alone. The problem though is that the quality and formulas of these two lipstick are totally different. To be blunt, the NYX formula kinda sucks.
As you can see from the photo, the swatch has dried really patchy, even though I tried my hardest for an even application, and just doesn't have the samecolour intensity as the MAC Velvet Teddy lipstick. On lips, Velvet Teddy feels really moisturising and barely-there, but the NYX Lip Lingerie feels sticky and drying. My previous experience of liquid lipsticks has been with Lime Crime's Velvetines, which have never felt this way.

One good thing about the NYX formula is that is is truely matte, with Velvet Teddy having a tiny bit of a sheen to it on my hand, and it lasts forever. I seriously could not get it off my hand, it's still there as I type this. I fell asleep last night with my makeup on (naughty Alice) and awoke this morning to stained pink coloured lips. Another noticable difference is the sent of the lipsticks. MAC's Velvet Teddy has it's signature sweet scent, whereas the NYX Lip Lingerie simply smells chemical.

Lastly, if you really want to complete your Velvet Teddy look (or create your own cheap Kylie Lip-Kit) then I would definitely recommend purchasing the £5.50 retractable NYX lip-liner in the shade 'Nude'. It's the perfect match for both the MAC and NYX lipsticks and has a lovely, creamy consistency (even if the pencil nib did break of instantly when I used it.)

What do you think to this dupe?

    1. Crazy isn't it?! My first ever MAC lipstick, then hardly a day after I buy something in the exact same shade without even swatching it! xx

  2. Wow! These are basically identical I love it! I think I'd go for the NYX as they're cruelty free, too! :)

    1. Yeah definitely! If you can work round the formula, it's an amazing alternative for the Velvet Teddy xx

  3. I love Velvet Teddy, I find the NYX Lingerie ones far too drying. I love a good matte lip but these just sucked the life out of my lips. They have such pretty shades though!

    1. I know! It's crazy how drying they are - I was really disappointed with the NYX formula as I love their soft matte lip creams xx

  4. An impressive dupe! I'm always looking out for cruelty free alternatives to MAC because I'm not fully comfortable with buying from a range with a sketchy record! Your photography was on point as always in this post, really well written! 🙌🏼

  6. I love both of these lipsticks! You're right that the textures are completely different, which is why it is justifiable to buy both!
