10 Things I've Learned From Working Full-Time

I've been at my new job for just over a month now and it's such a huge leap from school, what with the massively increased hours and a totally new environment.

Despite being a challenge, these past few weeks I've learned loads of new things, which I've managed to whittle down to 10 things I've learned from working full-time.

1. Early mornings are my friends.

Getting up at 7:30 may seem gross after rolling out of bed at 9 for the past two years, but I'm actually really enjoying having. more time to spend doing my makeup in the morning. I'm also not as tired when I get to work, having been up for longer already.

2. It's the people who make it worthwhile.

I can genuinely say that I adore every single person in my office and I would class them as my friends (if anyone from work is reading this, GO AWAY. I don't like any of you, obviously.) It makes coming to work every day really enjoyable, as it truly seems like we're all together for a bit of a chat whilst we process orders and answers the phone.

3. 8 hours actually passes surprisingly quickly.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but it's true. By the time I've sifted through my work emails, processed all online orders and made a few phone calls, it's suddenly time for dinner. Especially when we're all chatting and messing around, the time goes incredibly quickly.

4. Weekends are SO not long enough!

OMFG, it seems like I'm barely home before it's Monday again! I've started trying to make the most of every weekend, writing as many posts and watching as much TV as I can, hehe. I've also started doing things on Friday evenings too, to stretch out my weekend as long as possible. It works, as the last few weeks I've woken up early on a Sunday before realising I have another whole day to do nothing, yay.

5. Don't take yourself too seriously.

In an office environment such as where I work, you're going to get mugged off a lot if you take yourself too seriously and not join in with the 'office bantz'. It's great just being able to be myself at work and being surrounded by people who are friendly and down to earth, whilst winding each other up all at the same time.

6. It's tiring, but it's worth it.

Even though I'm only on apprentice wage, which kinda sucks, my first full payday is on Friday and I am SO BUZZING to finally have my own cash!

7. The day is either hectic or dead - there's no in between.

Working in sales is either incredibly busy, with the phones ringing constantly and tens of online orders coming through, or totally empty with all of us fighting over orders to entertain ourselves.

8. Picking out a different outfit for each day is the hardest part.

At Sixth form I could get away with wearing the same pair of jeans every day and just switching out my t-shirt, but now I'm working I actually try to wear something nice every day and make an effort with my hair and makeup. I start to realise just how many clothes I own, but how many pieces of clothing I actually hate!

9. Working hard feels good.

Not in a weird, masochistic way. More that knowing you have 100% earned your wage and spent your time productively helping the company you work for. When I first started doing tasks independently I felt so proud of myself.

10. Always offer to make the tea and coffee.

It makes people like you, lol. Plus if you're waiting for the kettle to boil, then you're not answering the phone, hehe... At first I couldn't really be bothered to make drinks, but I quickly realised that as soon as you're offering, everyone becomes your best friend.

Phew! Thank god it's nearly pay-day!

  1. 8 hours really goes by so fast if you have a lot to do! Sometimes it just feels like pure torture no matter how much you love your job haha :D

  2. I love this. I really enjoy working in an office environment and honestly think I'd miss it if I was doing something else! It is so important to voice these things though because its totally stuff that you don't have a clue about before you start doing it! :)

  6. I can't say that this would be the kind of thing I'd enjoy on a daily basis, I love working from home, but it's so good that you're enjoying your job so much. Nothing worse than doing something you hate! x

  7. Haha you're so right, picking a different outfit for each day is tough. You will get to days where you just think 'sod it' and throw on the closest thing you can get your hands on! Working is so much fun though, challenging but fun xxx

  8. As someone who just started working full as well, I relate with all of this (especially #7). Just like picking outfit, picking what look to do for the day is just as hard, should I be really elaborate with my eyes today? or should I make it simple with one-swipe wonder eye shadow?? ;)

  10. Weekends disappear faster than I can seem to catch them. 8 hours isn't that long when you're super busy but totally can feel like a lifetime if your job is dragging. I hate early mornings and tend to sleep in. I am just not a morning person.

  14. I think that one of the things I've learned from working full time is that it CHANGES you. Work-wise, if you've got a lot of tasks on your plate, you'll have to learn how to budget your time, and how to prioritise your tasks. I'm still on a learning curve--and the to-do lists and the Pomodoro timer has helped a lot! Plus, one can learn plenty of organisation skills--not just with work, but with everything else. It's one of the things I love at work, you can learn from a lot of people, especially those from the middle to the senior management. And there's that family atmosphere, so it's no longer new if someone drops by my office for a chat! :)
