Reasons Why Being A Lifestyle Blogger SUCKS

It's Friii-YAY! So that means it's time for another instalment in my much-loved SUCKS series. *Deadpool voice* Cue the music.

You know what's difficult? Being a lifestyle blogger. My blog being a cross between lifestyle and beauty (with an emphasis on lifestyle) brings me so much happiness, but some days I wish I'd just stuck to beauty. Today's ranty little post is a list of reasons why being a lifestyle blogger SUCKS.

We literally have no 'niche'.

Seriously, what even is a lifestyle blogger? What are we? Are we food, crafts, fashion, fitness? WHO ARE WE? WHY ARE WE HERE? Excuse us whilst we go and have an existential crisis and stroke our own hair to calm down.

Everyone assumes we love ourselves.

I'll admit, before I started blogging I just assumed lifestyle blogs were just online bragging diaries. OMG noOne of the biggest misconceptions about lifestyle bloggers is that we all have amazing lives that we write about 24/7 and look down on people who aren't as awesome as us. WE ARE ACTUALLY SUPER NICE PEOPLE WITH NORMAL LIVES. We don't get invited to parties every weekend and we aren't BFF's with Little Mix (though we totally wish we were.)

Constantly being asked "Are you going to blog about this?"

Do people really think that one random moment deserves a 500 word post on my blog? Um, no, lol. Lifestyle bloggers do not write about every. single. thing. that happens to them on a daily basis, and we would appreciate it if you just stopped asking us this. In short - we're not going to write about that time we fell over in Primark. That's just embarrassing and not even slightly glamorous.

We don't even like coffee that much.

Why the heck does everyone always assume that lifestyle bloggers are constantly hopped up on coffee and live in Starbucks? BITCH I DON'T EVEN DRINK COFFEE. We're not all super-cool hipsters with square glasses and scarves who sip sugar-free, non-fat, extra-foam caramel macchiatos all day. That stuff is expensive! I'm gonna be like the PG tips monkey and say "I'll keep it tea", thanks very much (and that's with milk and one sugar, you sugar-free hooligans.)

Blog photos are impossible to take.

It's ok for beauty bloggers, they have pretty products they can photograph. But does anyone understand how difficult it is to come up with photo ideas for lifestyle posts? There's only so many notebook and planner photos we can take before our blog looks like an online stationary store... FEEL OUR PAIN, YOU WRETCHED BEAUTY BLOGGERS!*

*Just kidding, I love you all.

We have to have ALL THE PROPS (that we never use.)

Following on from taking photos, we literally can't walk through H&M without seeing something we honestly need to have as it would make such a nice prop. The best part? We will totally forget about it and will cry when we once again complain we have nothing to photograph until we buy something else. Ahh, the trials and tribulations of a lifestyle blogger.

It's actually really hard to come up with post ideas.

Once you've exhausted all the generic 'how I edit my blog photos' and 'what's on my desk?' posts, it's so difficult to come up with new ideas for posts. We may even have to *dramatic music* branch out onto other topic areas *gasp* Oh the shame of it!

It's a tough crowd to please.

When people want to read makeup reviews, they head to a beauty blog. When they want to learn fitness tips, they check out a fitness blogger. But the stuff us lifestyle bloggers write about is so totally random that it's often difficult to find a loyal audience to cater for. It may be hard to believe, but not everyone enjoys reading our ramblings as much as we like to think they do *cry*.

Because even though it's difficult, we wouldn't change it for the world.

Our blogs are our babies. Yes, being a lifestyle blogger can be tricky and downright frustrating at times, but at the end of the day we're still doing what we love on a near-daily basis. Curse our urge to blog!

Lifestyle bloggers, what are some of the difficulties you face?
Is there anything I've forgotten?
Do you even like coffee?!?!

  1. I use lifestyle as a catch all for the things that aren't beauty and fashion related. I also am addicted to coffee...Sad but true.

    1. I legit don't drink coffee unless it has like 5 sugars and is drowned in squirty cream!

  2. These are all so true and I can relate to all of these hahah :D except that coffee one. I've always been drinking coffee, black simple coffee. It's honestly the best thing in the whole world. I'm addicted.
Or that's because I'm from Finland and some researchers did a research about finns and coffee and found out that we drink it a lot. And by lot I mean, a lot. I can easilly drink 4-5 cups per day :D

  3. I died at the WHAT ARE WE, WHY ARE WE EVEN HERE?! part ;)
it's funny because it's sad, and true!
I do love writing about my random stuff and I notice there aren't many who do so. It's surely easier to write about the same things taking pretty pictures, but as a reader I find it boring after a while.
I call this situation the smarties blogs vs sandwich blogs! I wrote about it on my blog, feel free to check it out!! http://300daysofengland.blogspot.com.au/2016/01/how-to-read-blog.html

  4. I have to say I do like coffee, but I can totally agree with the other points. I can never think of suitable things to photograph for my blog, like what does a cactus and my Rimmel 107 have to do with my post about mental health?!
I do also get non-bloggers asking if I'm going to blog about things all the time!! X

  5. Lol, I tend to gear my blog toward beauty at the moment but do enjoy writing lifestyle stuff, it is hard to think of photos that can go with them though!

  7. Haha, this post did make me smile! I love writing a lifestyle blog, but I certainly struggle to find things to write about and photograph. As for coffee - I do like it, but there's no way I can afford to buy it every single day!

  8. Loving this post - and can relate to mostly everything (except I do love coffee ... and tea - with a spot of almond milk, haha). I still classify my blog as a lifestyle because I don't always gear each post toward one category. Perhaps one of the biggest challenges is promoting my blog because, well, everyone seems to have a lifestyle, what makes mine different from others? ... yup. :)

  9. I feel your pain! I'm a THEATRE blogger, which is so much fun, but so hard to run. I'm constantly regretting boxing myself in as when I very occasionally write travel or personal posts I feel like they stand out and don't have a place on my blog. Not to mention taking photos for features in a NIGHTMARE! Great post though! :D

  10. I'm sold on the coffee but try to curb the addiction to one iced mocca a day. I try to blog about a different kind of lifestyle to the one I knew for the best part of 50 years. It''s a bitch trying to capture an audience.

  11. My stomach became sick of my daily doses of coffee but I need it to stay awake and focused! I can relate to all of your post and I can't think of one more thing to add. Except I think we feel this because we don't have a niche really!

  12. I only recently started a blog and have no niche. I thought maybe I would be considered a lifestyle blogger but I honestly had no clue. Thanks for clarifying for me. Now I don't feel so lost and alone.

  14. Love this post and it made me laugh so that's a good sign. I'm a beauty blogger but I've slowly been branching out into other topics but I just figure it's fine because after all, it's my blog and I can post what I want xx

  15. Ahh! Thank the heavens for Twitter. Just found you because of your "I don't fit in" post and loved it. Clicked this and loved it, too! Love your cheeky little attitude! I'm a "lifestyle" blogger myself... Started out thinking there would be more beauty, then I realized, "Wow, med student niche is really strong" then I was like, eff it. I wanna do a little bit of everything! And you know what? That's totally ok! While I might be a little addicted to coffee (even did a review on a somewhat obscure brand), I can totally related to everything else you wrote!
