Make red lips your signature look Dainty Alice

Due to being blonde and delicately pale, I often see red as a colour I simply can't pull off. I don't have dark hair to balance out the pigmentation of the shade, but yet blonde celebrities such as Taylor Swift have managed to make red lips their signature look. How could this be?

I decided to make it my mission to find five gorgeous red lipsticks that don't wash out pale skin or look too stark with light coloured hair, lipsticks to suit my fellow fair beauties, and preferably all under £10. Note there will be no MAC lipsticks included in this post as I do not own any!

Essence 04 'On The Catwalk' - £2.29
I discovered the Essence brand when I was in Wilkos a few weeks back. I also bought two lipliners and a nude lipstick along with the red one. Albeit not being the best quality (well, what do you expect for less than £3?) it is a pretty, slightly sheer shade that feels moisturising and not drying in the slightest. I would describe this lipstick as more of a lip tint or stain, just because of the sheerness of the colour.

With a few layers of product, it's an incredibly pretty and subtle reddy-brown berry shade, just enough to add a hint of colour to your lips without it being an OTT red. The name of the lipstick is the 'longlasting lipstick' (which is relatively true) and the sleek, matte black packaging makes the lipstick look a lot more expensive than it actually is.

Essence 04, Rimmel Kate Moss 107, Rimmel Kate Moss 111
Rimmel Kate Moss 107 'Rosetto' - £5.49
I discovered this Rimmel range a few years ago when I was looking to buy my friend a lipstick for her birthday and couldn't resist picking up a couple for myself. Rosetto is a stunning wine red which is incredibly pigmented and looks almost purple in the tube, but compliments pale skin beautifully. It does however feel very drying and I find I have to apply a lipbalm first before using this lipstick or it's slightly uncomfortable to wear.

The best part about this lipstick is that it lasts ages. I can apply it in the morning and it will still be there hours later, although it smudges quite easily when eating and drinking so I tend to dust a little powder over it to set it.

Rimmel Kate Moss 111 'Kiss Of Life' - £5.49
Kiss Of Life is a very vibrant imperial red that looks delicious on lips. Like Rosetto it is pretty drying but also tends to last a good while. This lipstick is a wonderful evening lipstick due to the vividness of the colour and also leaves behind a stain on lips that lasts all night.

Being a lot more 'red' than the wine coloured Rosetto, this lipstick looks outstanding with pale skin, but I do look slightly washed out with my blonde hair. This lipstick requires slightly heavy eye makeup to balance out a fair complexion, but when applied lightly is still suitable for a daytime look.

Lime Crime red lipstick Dainty Alice
Lime Crime 'Retrofuturist'
Limecrime 'Retrofuturist' - £5.54
As you all know I am a huge Lime Crime fan, so it actually pains me to say this lipstick actually feels cheap to apply due to the shiny, plasticky-ness of the lipstick. This does not however take away from the mesmerising colour that it gives lips. As this lipstick has blue undertones, it is described as a 'true 'red' and is incredibly vibrant with staying power that is awesome.

As with all Lime Crime lipsticks, Retrofuturist is vanilla scented and looks gorgeous once on the lips. It does feel very thick and can can smudge a little bit when eating and drinking, but leaves behind a stain that is very difficult to budge and lasts forever.

Soap & Glory red lipstick palette

Soap & Glory 'Man Trap' - £6.00
Despite looking very bright red in the pan, Man Trap actually shows up light reddy-brown on my skin, similar to the Essence lipstick but a lot more pigmented and less sheer. This colour could be described as 'Indian Red' (yes, I looked up 'red' on Wikipedia and looked at all the variations.)

This lipstick is very creamy as I've found all Soap & Glory lipsticks to be and also tastes like chocolate. I am considering buying it in a full sized tube as along with Guavarama it is my favourite from this lipstick palette.

When using a makeup wipe to remove the swatches from my arm, I found this lipstick to be the one that required the most work to remove, which I found odd considering the staying power on lips isn't too great. Despite this, it's a lovely and subtle day time red.

  1. I don't own any of these lipsticks but I do have multiple red shaded ones :D I don't know why all my lipsticks are red, I should totally get some other shades too.

  2. I think Essence is so under rated! :) They are cruelty free as well, win win win!

  3. I love the Rimmel 107 lipstick, I rarely ever wear red lipsticks though as I'm so stuck in my brown/mauve ways haha x

  4. I get what you mean about not thinking you can pull off red. I am more of a tan white, but I have blonde hair, and the red always makes my teeth really yellow in pictures. I do love these shades though. I may just have to try Limecrime 'Retrofuturist'. I absolutely love the shade!
